Madrid is the capital of Spain and the third most populated city in the European Union. It is not only the seat of the Spanish government, but also the official residence of the King of Spain and is considered a major financial center. Madrid is divided into 21 districts that are then segmented into 128 barrios . Separating Madrid in two is Paseo de la Castellana , a large north-south avenue linking the old city with the modern business districts. To either side of the Castellana the street layout is a gridiron pattern.

The Royal Palace in the Opera district and The Prado Museum on the El Paseo del Prado are generally mentioned as the city's top attractions. Plaza Puerta del Sol , the bustling plaza that is literally the centre of the city in the Old Town or Sol barrio is also not to be missed, and may be the perfect location if you are looking for a centrally located holiday flat. For an alternative to the tourist areas, explore the Malsana barrio with its abundance of art galleries and boutiques, bars and trendy nightlife. Or check out the Chueca barrio featuring fashionable boutiques, outdoor cafes and traditional tavern-style bars. For those of you who love going out - Madrid's vibrant nightlife has something for everyone from tapas bars, to Flamenco theatres and clubs.

All areas of Madrid are serviced by a very efficient metro system with 13 lines. Most barrios have their own station so it is easy to get to each neighbourhood. The bus service is also very efficient and will easily get you were you need to go within the city.
